A lovely client of mine was kind enough to allow me and a team of photographers to invade her home for a day to take photographs for the June issue of Styleline magazine.

Jeanine Matlow took my rambling interview (you know us designers, once we start talking about style and design we just can’t stop) and turned it into a very accurate and gracious description of the interior styling and how I strive for a balance of curve and a place to rest your eye, so that one can appreciate each unique piece in the room.

Outdoor Fabric used for Indoors

I’ve been mentioning this quite often lately to clients; the benefit of using outdoor fabric as your indoor fabric. Not all that long ago outdoor fabrics were stiff, weird colors with odd patterns, but now outdoor fabric has come a very long way in terms of patterns, colors but mostly in softness, texture and weave. Most people are unaware that there exists a whole new world of outdoor fabrics, such as,velvets and silk, yes, velvets and silks, all from 100% solution dyed acrylic. Imagine the possibilities of a fabric that looks like silk but doesn’t fade…indoor draperies, outdoor draperies, bedding, dining chairs, shower curtains, place mats, truly if you can imagine it, it can be done. Do you realize that this means a white upholstered sofa is no longer off limits if you have young children, teens, pets or a messy husband. Seriously you can have a white sofa and serve red wine with no worries!

Below is a very small sampling just to pique your awareness of what is available. Hard to believe, I know, but in most cases you really can’t tell the difference in feel between a cotton indoor velvet and the acrylic outdoor velvet; likewise with chenilles and twills. Ok, I admit it’s hard to duplicate a beautiful silk, however, you’d be very surprised at how similar it looks. Check ‘em out.

THE LIST #6 Single Cushion Sofas

I adore single cushion sofas, recently I had my 2 over 2 seat sofa converted to a single cushion. I added new pillows; see my choices from a previous post here. I’ve included some of my other favorites.

You’ll notice if you click back to the previous post that I didn’t do a pillow in the Manual Canovas Byzance in Quartz. I ordered it with the intention of making pillows it and they were so kind to send me a little extra yardage that I ended up covering a chair on the seat and inside back as shown here.

Spring 2011 High Point Market Finds

Here’s my top ten Spring 2011 High Point, North Carolina Market Finds. It’s a mixture of furniture, art, and accessories selected for various reasons. Take a look…

Metal Finial that stands 38” high 16” wide and 16”deep which is suitable for indoor or outdoor use. A fantastic accent in the garden, flanking the front entry on a pedestal or a pair on top of a bookcase. A spectacular statement piece.

(2)

Slipper Chair which comes covered in a natural linen as shown. The dimensions of the chair are 26w 31h 25d. Perfect accent for a bathroom, in the bedroom, closet, or a pair in front of a fireplace. I especially liked the scale, the feminine lines with a little sexiness. Reasonably priced too.

An elegant outdoor lantern, what else is there to say…attach it to your house, a deck post or add post(s) to your landscape just to accommodate it. You could create a “room” in your landscape for dining, or line a pathway. Simply grand!

This is a new introduction by CTH. Mirrored top, with a uniquely shaped leg. Of course, you wouldn’t buy them as a set, pick one as an accent. They have the perfect balance of curve and yet a crispness about them too.

A grouping of framed intaglios. This is another manner of really making a statement. Put these in a random pattern up a set of stairs, or down a long hallway. If your kitchen cabinets don’t go to the ceiling and you have that dead space, line these up beautifully across the tops. Lovely!!

This set of Tribeca Wood Jars with White Finials, oh my gosh, they’re simply elegant, I absolutely love the lines. The large one stands 7” x 19.25” high, medium 6” x 15.75” high and the small 4.75” x 12.75” high.

Because I can’t resist anything pink. Ok actually, pink, apple green, turquoise, coral ~ I can’t resist those either!!

This glass top table caught my eye, one because of its great lines and two because of its reasonable price. The dimensions are 26w 26h 18d.

While I wasn’t crazy about the finish on this glass front cabinet it does come in a less distressed finish and multiple colors, that I do like. I thought this would be perfect not only in the bathroom, but in a kitchen or dining room where space is limited but a little extra storage is needed plus a great display. Stacking similar dishes or glass ware would look beautiful. Could be used in a child’s room to display dolls, car collections, rocks, you name it.

These looked wonderful for two reasons, one, since we are nearing the season of outdoor dining here in Michigan my thoughts go directly to accessorizing the patio and two, I can’t resist candle light. Obviously these are beautiful for inside as well.

Window Treatments

One of my favorite elements of the design process that I enjoy are window treatments, they have tremendous impact to the design scheme, depending on the room they can create softness, warmth, drama, color, texture, make the window appear larger, separate a room, light and temperature control, privacy what ever look is desired there exists a treatment for it. This is the first official post to my entries called Window Treatments. Periodically, I will post pictures of treatments that I’ve designed or am in the process of designing for clients. For the first entry I’m going to keep it simple, future posts will include my thoughts on fabrics, lining, interlining, trim, hardware, blinds, shutters, sheers and anything that relates to windows (and maybe a pillow or two).

This soft feminine tailored balloon shade is installed over a sunken tub. The combination of plantation shutters with the non functioning balloon shade provides the client with privacy, daylight control and prettiness.

THE LIST ~ #5 Ottomans

Whenever I work with a client on designing their main hang out and relax area of their home, whether it be a hearthside room, family room, cozy den or theatre room I insist on a seating arrangement that is accompanied by a something to put their feet up on. I’ve never met anyone who lounges and relaxes by sitting straight up in a chair or on a sofa. Everyone likes to lean back and put their feet up. Here are some of my favorite and most stylish ottomans that you can put your feet up on and they also serve a dual purpose as a coffee table.

Alex Cocktail Ottoman – Hickory Chair

This one is fantastic because you can also add this optional wood tray. Hickory Chair will also customize the size of the ottoman in their made to measure program, see below (note the tray only comes in one size that fits the above ottoman). This is very sharp done in leather with nail head trim.

This next ottoman is also by Hickory Chair and is another highly function piece. It has a tufted top that opens to reveal 2 serving trays and deep storage. Its available with a bun or tapered foot. I actually own this piece and have it in my lower level – its one of my favorite pieces in the house.

I include this one because its large 42” x 31 and has a very reasonable price point. The only thing that is customizable is the fabric, we can put any fabric on it but the finish is as is. Unless of course you’re a DIYer then, as you wish.

Just arrived at Instinctive Interiors at home is the scrumptious bedding line by Home Treasures. I’ve used this line in the past on several occasions for client projects and have purchased it for myself so I’m very excited to offer it at the boutique.

They coverlets coverlets are custom sized and are made to order, which I love, this way you can determine the perfect finished length of the sides so that they meet the side rail of the bed or the just below where the bed skirt begins, if you have one.

THE LIST ~ #4 Monogramming

When it comes to a design element that's so simple and classic that it surpasses the test of time, you have what’s called a monogram. My parents who are about to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary have monogrammed china by Royal Doulton similar to the set on the right below by Pickard. I have always admired its simple elegance.

Ok, this is a little seque but look how fabulous this is Grecian Gorham antique spoon from 1882 with the name Alice monogrammed on it is, now if my name were “Alice” that spoon would be on its way to me right now.

Of course there is monogrammed stationary, my favorite source for this is Crane. There is a very special feeling that you get when you both send a note with your initials or name monogrammed on the paper and even more special is when you receive a note with someone else’s monogram. The monogram can be as simple as one letter, or your first name, first and last name or the traditional 3 initials.

“Pretty”

I unapologetically love pretty. Pretty music, pretty fabric, pretty flowers, pretty table settings, pretty furniture, pretty chandeliers, pretty art, pretty accessories, pretty anything!!! I live prettily (yes, it’s a word I looked it up). I am not edgy, not earthy (although I care about the environment but earthy to me is a beautiful garden), not gauche, not excessive. My design aesthetic is pretty. It is also organized, tidy, comfortable, functional, timeless, classic, fresh and pretty. In truth, I’m speaking of a lifestyle of being kind to yourself, enjoying what you’ve worked hard for, creating and living in a home where you feel pampered regardless of budget.

I ramble on about this, because I feel it is so important to live a pretty life. I say this because this is something that I strive for with my clients. We all live hectic lives, none of us are more busy than the other, really, it’s just a different type of busy. So when I say I strive to have my clients to live a pretty life, I envision their day starting with the perfect beverage be it cup of coffee, tea, or fruit smoothie in a cup or glass that’s just the ideal size and feel in their hand, that they take the time to sit down in a comfortable dining chair and enjoy breakfast from a dish that they find pleasing to their eye.

I also want my clients to have a soft comfortable, absorbent towel waiting for them after their shower. Come home to a room that functions perfectly for them with comfortable upholstery, good lighting, a place to put their feet up and a spot for their “stuff”. I desire for them, at the end of the day, to crawl into a bed that has soft sheeting and a coverlet with the perfect weight for the season. Good lighting is key in the bedroom so that you can sneak in a few pages or chapters of your latest read.

I find that when my surroundings are organized, comfortable and pleasing to my eye, I’m able to think more clearly, am more at ease and less stressed. To me that’s living a pretty life!

With Michigan experiencing the best Memorial Day weekend weather in history, (at least my history) it felt more like the 4th of July!! We spent nearly the entire weekend outdoors, which is how I love to spend summer.

Sandra’s Top 10: White Dishes

Something every home should have is a good set of white dishes. They are the perfect basic for all table settings. All white or mixed with more colorful plates you just can’t go wrong with white. Here are ten of my favorite patterns.

The fun thing about Juliska’s Berry and Thread is that the pattern also comes in a cappuccino Brown, Ice Blue, Butter Yellow and Pistachio Green. Which provides endless possibilities for a beautiful table, not to mention the entire line of Juliska patterns are designed to mixed and matched with each other, including their glassware (a later topic).

Its beauty at a bargain that made me include these in the list – a 20 piece place setting $70. Note that they’re not available in stores, only online. Which is something that you should know, much of the really fantastic stuff at Target you won’t find in the store it’s only online.

The Grace Chair

I’m having it covered in this fabulous Designer’s Guild fabric called Ombrione in the color Ocean. It’s a beautiful washed velvet classic damask with a soft linen look ground. As Designer’s Guild describes it “timeless and elegant in the extreme”, no truer words were ever spoken!! The welt will be in a turquoise linen.

One of the many benefits of having my own upholstery line is that I can use the fabrics that I’ve selected for the line, or at any point use a “to the trade only” fabric to completely customize the look at the boutique. So expect to see designer fabrics and trims, such as Barry Dixon’s new line for Vervain (see below) recently featured in Traditional Home or Barbara Barry’s and Candice Olson’s line of fabrics and trims for Kravet on the boutique floor.

The first piece to arrive will be a loveseat in this classic English Saddle Arm style with a Flax colored linen fabric and beautiful trim detail. I’ve chose a loveseat for the floor because of the limited space but the pieces are available by the inch. So if a client needs a 101” or a 74”sofa, the factory can accommodate the request. Also available are optional leg choices. All will be standard with spring down seat cushion, other cushions are available as well.

Here is the fabric and trims and how they’ll be applied:

Classic Linen (actually a viscose and linen blend) in the color Flax –

a mini cord in the color Linen will replace all the welt.

The love seat will be dressed with pillows in this new fabric from Barry Dixon’s line for Vervain.

The List – # 3 Paddywax Candles

You just can’t beat the fragrance of Gardenia by Paddywax, hands down the most beautiful home fragrance, not too sweet, not too floral, just a beautiful romantic fragrance. Definitely don’t confuse this with the wretched fragrance of my youth, Jungle Gardenia. This is by far is Paddywax’s biggest seller and has a cult following, one whiff and you’ll understand why!

Runner’s up….

Ok…Paperwhite known more for it’s holiday presentation, but this fragrance is a beautiful trio of jasmine, fresh paperwhite and lily of the valley ( a childhood favorite, my mom always brings me a bouquet of Lilly of the Valley on Mother’s Day).

Daffodil, the name alone means SPRING. Treat yourself to beautiful home fragrance, it ranks right up there with a new lipstick!!

Upholstery by INSTINCTIVE INTERIORS at home

Back from the tour of the plant that will be making the custom upholstery for my boutique. First and foremost, I was impressed by the cleanliness, organization of the factory PLUS the pure hard work with such attention to detail by the employees.

The European Beech Wood frames are imported from Spain and Italy. The factory maintains good stock, which is why I can have a custom sofa in my client’s home in about 5 weeks. Notice how clean the floors are, how many factories have you seen this immaculate?

Perhaps it’s because I just returned from a week long vacation and while we had wonderful accommodations, I looked forward to sleeping in my own bed, is why I begin my 20 must have list, with the BED.

I love a beautifully made bed, I’m especially drawn to all white beds with just a dash of color, but I’m also crazy for a mixture of pattern and color. For me it depends on my mood and the season. I’m partial to a mix of textures, cotton sheets with a slight sheen, a quilted matelasse coverlet, linen shams, a few boudoir pillows, and a neatly folded down comforter at the foot of the bed. My ritual is to wash the sheets on Sundays in Linen Wash so that I begin the week with a fresh start.

Artist Tiffani Taylor

I’m so excited to introduce to you a fabulous young talented artist Tiffani Taylor. When I first saw her work I was struck by the beautiful vibrant colors, the mixture of media, and the happy energy yet peacefulness that emanated from her art.

Tiffani is a graduate and loyal supporter of Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) located in Savannah, Georgia. Originally from Utah, as teenager she saw a poster advertising the college and knew that was going to be her path, a path made possible by her extreme talent and a presidential scholarship to SCAD. Her work exhibited at Shop SCAD, a gallery in downtown Savannah where students and alumni showcase their work, quickly captured attention of passersby and catapulted her to national exposure.

Her signature poppies were included in an exclusive cashmere sweater designed for the New York retailer Henri Bendel, her work is included in the collections of Oprah Winfrey, Diane Von Furstenberg, and Vogue editor at large Andre Leon Talley. Additionally her paintings are featured in galleries internationally including the Dali Museum.

I am so thrilled to feature her work in my boutique INSTINCTIVE INTERIORS at home.

A little Crazy Around Here…

As I’m sure you noticed, I took a brief hiatus from blogging. It was just a little crazy around here, 2010 started off with a bang, seven new client projects (which pushed my home projects totally to the back burner), my soon to be open home furnishings boutique, plus the online site targeted for May and most recently I’ve started designing an exclusive upholstery line for the afore mentioned new boutique INSTINCTIVE INTERIORS, at home. I know what you’re thinking, that was the perfect time to be chatting online about all that’s happening, but there just wasn’t any extra time, and I do require sleep to function. Plus anyone who knows me well will tell you that I’m an all or nothing personality, I either do it all with GUSTO or nothing, there was no time for blog GUSTO, so ya got nothing. OK enough about that…

Many exciting things are happening so to jump back in, I thought I’d share with you a sampling of the products that will be featured in the boutique.

Client Project: Foyer and Powder Room

This is a small project for a client who I’ve been working with for about a year. They have asked me to spruce up their foyer and the guest powder room which is just off the foyer.

In the powder room sink area I’ve selected this beautiful hand embroidered velvet to upholster the walls. Note that this room is not a main powder room that is used every day.

There is enough room in the water closet for a small piece of furniture; I love the luxury of space in a powder room where I can add a chest or a chair. I chose this Serpentine Chest in Antique Burl with a 12” depth, it fits perfectly. I’m now searching for an intriguing piece of art to hang above plus I’ll add a small lamp and accessories to the top.

In the foyer I’ve selected the Frederica Bench from the Suzanne Kasler collection at Hickory Chair.

It will be covered in Bosphorus Red fabric by Lee Jofa seen below with Samuel and Sons (which by the way is my very favorite trim company) Cambridge Strie Braid in Black, featuring antique brass nail head trim spaced 1” apart. Note that the white floral stripe will be positioned up the middle of the seat and back cushion of the bench with the more leafy red and tan pattern flanking either side of the floral stripe. The outside back will be simply upholstered in the appropriately named fabric Simply Canvas in Cinnabar (below) with the Cambridge Strie Braid and spaced nail head trim around the perimeter of the back panel.

I’m also adding this small Berrod Chest in Antique Black to the foyer.

I’m still in search of the perfect mirror to hang over this chest, and the requisite lamp light that sets the mood for the entry, see my post here on foyers. I will also be including a pair of laurel leaf mirrored back sconces that will flank the double entry doors. Unfortunately, I do not have a picture as they’ve been discontinued (and the client has them at their home).

Sandra’s Top 10: Favorite Dining Chairs

Here are my 10 favorite dining chairs, frankly it was hard to whittle the selection to ten.

1. I love this Chippendale side chair by Hickory Chair for it’s flirty skirt and the ability to have fun with monograms and contrast welt. Note the tiny covered buttons at the base of the seat back just above the skirt, great detail!!

I’ve used them as both dining room chairs and breakfast nook chairs. P.S. They also are available with a tufted back, lovely!!

4. This is a fantastic chair because it delivers a lot of style in a small package 21” wide x 23.5” deep. Not all dining rooms are blessed with large proportions (actually I prefer small intimate dining rooms anyway) and this chair has classic English lines with a feminine touch. It also can be customized in some of the coolest finishes!!

Projects at Home Update

Recall that I was freshening up the look of my sofa by adding new pillows. This is the latest, and since I’m faxing the P.O. s for the fabrics tomorrow, I’m confident in my selections.

Three large pillows 30” x 30” across the back of the sofa (replacing the current back cushions). Plus I’m having the face fabric of the pillow diamond quilted and leaving the back the plain velvet.

I’ve started working with a new client this week, they are a young delightful couple, and they’ve chosen to begin with their great room. It is customary for me to request that the client look through magazines and put sticky notes on both the rooms and elements that they admire, as well as, things they dislike, which is equally beneficial.

It’s always interesting to discover how clients, who think they don’t have a “style” once they start perusing magazines and flagging room scenes and elements that they like they find that there is a common thread and consistency to what they admire.

The wife grew up in a home that was quite contemporary and those influences are in many of the furniture pieces that are existing in the home. The husband prefers a more traditional look and doesn’t want anything too dainty. We had such a great meeting last night with many ah ha moments and I’m so excited to get started on the project!!!

Here is the photo from House Beautiful that is our inspiration room, although they admire the monochromatic design of this room, they would like a few more pops of color. During our discussions yesterday we discovered that they like the visual texture of this room and would like fabrics that are tactile and soft in their design plan.

Projects at home…

I want to start this post by stating that I am not a DIYer. I have people, top notch people that I have worked with for several years that complete my client projects and most of my projects. I say most because on occasion, I get a wild hair and will try my hand at something, usually when I do this, its either because I’m experimenting and I’m not sure that I’m going to like the outcome (this way I can adjust mid project if needed) or I’m simply being impatient. Like this past summer when I decided one Saturday morning that I wanted to paint the exterior of my studio and three different clients just happened to drive by while I was painting. One even yelled out the window, “hey don’t you have people that do that for you:?? A little awkward but absolutely hilarious!!!
OR the other task I will try on occasion, is sewing. After 12 years of home economics and the “sewing badge” to be my first earned as a Girl Scout, I get the urge to sew something. It’s usually a pillow or a tablecloth, Christmas stocking or Christmas Tree skirt. Once in this house I did make drapery panels, lined and interlined, which I will never do again, because my workroom does a much better job, plus it took me twice as long because I did a prototype first.
Anyway, now that I’ve said that, I’m planning on doing a little freshening up/ finishing up a few projects here at home. My first one is to swap out the pillows on my sofa. I’m going to remove the back pillows and replace them with 3 30” x 30” and 2 24” x 24” down filled pillows and a small lumbar in the center.

Keep in mind that I’m freshening up with pillows, I love these colors and will maintain that scheme in my great room for now. This is also something that I encourage my clients to do, after a while or seasonally, it’s time to freshen the room with new pillow covers. I purchased the above accent pillow covers a few years ago in a shop in Saint Germaine in the 6th arrondissement of Paris France. While I have truly enjoyed them they are starting to show wear.

Second Project:

This is a chair in my great room, pretty but I feel that it lacks interest…I usually have a pillow on it but it doesn’t seem to be enough, I think it needs a little perking up. Maybe it’s the pillow that I just purchased above from Designers Guild? Or I may add some decorative tape to the back and seat cushion or reupholster it altogether. Stay tuned….
Third Project:
Here is a picture of my dining room, it has not always been a dining room, first it was an office, which I quickly grew out of it. Since my home does not have a dining room per se’, which I very much have missed, recently I decided to transform this room into one. Although it is small, believe it or not it accommodates eight very cozily, and there is nothing better than hanging out with 8 of my closest friends enjoying delicious food, a decadent bottle of wine and fabulous conversation!! The room still needs tweaking…it looks like an office turned dining room. Not that I have an issue with rooms that are dual purpose dining /office, I just don’t want one.

I’m particularly troubled by the ceiling its boring and the trim lacks interest too. I have selected a couple of Ralph Lauren Regent Metallics colors for the trim and ceiling.

Back in October I traveled to Chicago to attend the Design Chicago 2009 which was a series of seminars and special keynote speakers. When I say keynote, I mean KEYNOTE, such as Barbara Barry, Daryl Carter, Barclay Butera, Matthew Smyth which I enjoyed immensely. Part of the reason for my visit was to obtain my CEU’s for ASID. One of the CEUs believe it or not was How to Dress a Beautiful Bed hosted by the Ruggeri Gallery Home Showroom in the Mart that carries the Peacock Alley bedding line. After the seminar we were invited back to the showroom and there is where I found the most wonderful product…Linen Wash and Towel Wash. It work beautifully and it’s fragrance is heavenly. I especially like the towel wash fragrance.

I’m partial to white towels, matter in fact, if you’re ever a guest at my house you’ll see that the only color of towel that I own is white. I also like them to be bright white and soft, I’m not a fan of harsh chemicals so I don’t bleach neither do I use fabric softener. This product does just that, it keeps the towels white and soft. In the past I have had to replace the white towels often because the cotton does oxidize and they become a dingy white, which is why I don’t spend a lot of money on towels but this product makes an inexpensive towel even better. In the past, I’ve purchased my towels at Costco, they have this great deal on Martex towels which are 6 towels for $19.99 that’s not a typo…20 bucks for 6 towels. I just looked at the Costco website and they don’t list them on the site but they might be in the store.

P.S. The Martex hand towels and washcloths are equally nice and inexpensive.

Table Lamps that I love…

Ok, perhaps I got carried away but I feel that a beautiful lamp, well placed, adds so much to the design and comfort of a room. Many of these I have used in client projects, a few I own…it can be dizzying selecting a lamp because there are so many fabulous options. Since I didn’t post nearly a fraction of of the lamps that I had in my file, I will have a second post in the near future of other favorites. Plus I haven’t even touched on floor lamps, there are some gorgeous ones available too.

Lamp Light 101

As designers sometimes we forget that what comes second nature to us isn’t known by all. For example, lighting a room with lamps where proportion and height does matter. Yes, recessed lights come in handy and there exists some very stylish ones, but in my opinion are overused because they’re easy, lamp light requires planning and foresight as to where floor plugs and wall plugs may be needed as well as switches controlling those plugs.

Nothing exceeds the warmth and beauty of lamp light. There is no cozier welcome home than walking through the door to a small lamp lit on a hall table. I keep mine on timers.

I am not an exceptional drawer, so be kind! Here are a few sketches to help illustrate the best placement for lamp light:

Living Rooms:

When seated in a chair or sofa the bottom of the lamp shade should be 40” – 42” from the floor. Likewise is true for floor lamps 42” above the floor. If the lamp shade is higher you’ll suffer from the glare of the bulb. If it’s too low, it’s not beneficial for reading. Here’s an adjustment that you make if the lamp shade is higher than 42” above the floor, move it about 10” behind your shoulder near the rear corner of the chair.

Bedrooms:

If you like to read in bed, the bottom of the lampshade on the bedside table should be about 20” from the top of your mattress or at shoulder height.

Office:

When you’re sitting at your desk, the bottom of the lamp shade should be…guess!!! At eye level. A typical desk height is 30” so the bottom of the lamp shade would be 14” – 20” above the table top depending on the person’s torso height.

I always tell my clients that your foyer is the handshake of your house. Its a glimpse about the person and what lies beneath the surface… How your entryway is designed sets the personality for your home and piques visitors interest as to what is beyond.

Some of the elements that I always include as part of the foyer’s design are:

Chair, or a bench, it can be small; it provides a place where your guest can sit down to put their shoes on or take them off. Or it serves as a place to set a purse down while your guest puts their coat on.
A table, chest, console to place fresh or silk flowers, a lamp (I love coming home to lamp light, there is something very welcoming and cozy about walking into a house that has a lamp on specifically for you (I have mine on timers). Framed artwork or pictures, a tray for keys, mail, Blackberry.
A mirror, again this can be a small if you lack space but you need it to do a onceover before you open the door for guests or head out for the day. It also provides guests a place check their outfit after they remove their coat and ready themselves before leaving.

How to Secure a Christmas Tree in a Planter

First, this is a favorite planter of mine that I usually have outdoors but I wanted to use it in my living room to hold the Christmas tree. Since it stands 3 feet tall I needed to make sure that the tree wouldn’t topple over so there was some unfamiliar engineering involved.

My first idea was to find a container that fit exactly in the planter and then find a tree stand that fit in the container. I have on many occasions looked for the perfectly fitting container, without success so I knew that I was going to be on a wild goose chase. Nevertheless, I was determined.

After several stops at local nurseries I hit success at Detroit Garden Works (of course, it’s a fabulous place) where Rob Yedinak helped me brainstorm the idea and we came up with the smaller clay pot plus the “mangerish” hemp that filled the area between the clay pot and the iron. The pot was filled with pea gravel to create a strong heavy foundation for the stand that was placed on top of the planter.

Here’s the small stand that sits perfectly on top of the clay pot filled with gravel.

As a designer I love using a rug as the inspiration for the room. Or the explosion of color can continue from the rug in the upholstery pieces, wall color, draperies and art. There are so many options here!

Annie Selke for Vanguard

Anyone who knows me well, knows that I like color, all color. I enjoy creating muted and softly hued spaces for my clients, as I truely savor those environments, however, I currently live in shades of chartreuse, fushia, coral, tangerine tempered by large doses of white and icey blue.

This is why Annie Selke's collection for Vanguard Furniture has captured my attention. The colors in the fabrics have the punch that I gravitate toward, however, she masterfully balances that energy by maintaining simpler lines in her casegood and upholstery pieces. The fantastic part about the collection is while yes it's the perfect ying and yang, bright with quiet. You have the ability to create a room that has a lot of ying (bright) or one that is totally yang (quiet) by coupling the clean lined pieces with a softer fabric palatte if you choose.

Alexa Hampton for Hickory Chair

I have just returned from five fantastic days at the High Point, North Carolina Fall Furniture Market. High Point's Market is a highlight of my year, I go with a long shopping list for my clients and then can hardly wait to email them pictures of what I've found. Which is why this post is a little delayed ~ they come first :-). I have my "must see" show rooms, Hickory Chair is definitely one of them.

Alexa Hampton has introduced several furniture pieces to her existing collection that are a knockout! If her name sounds familiar, she is the daughter of the late Mark Hampton, an interior design icon, who also had a collection of furniture with Hickory Chair. After her father's death in 1998 she took the reigns as president of Mark Hampton, LLC.

Note the optional ferrule on the feet. Which brings me to mention the many custom options that Hickory Chairs offers. They not only offer customers own hardware, which is where the customer can select from several options that they offer, but many of their upholstery pieces can be built by the inch, a program that they call M2M. I'm often asked, "isn't wallpaper out of style"? The answer is a resounding "NO"! Wallpaper is back with such a demand that manufacturers are having trouble keeping it in stock!

On a recent trip to Savannah, Georgia; I visited the Mansion on Forsyth Park, not only was it a fabulously chic boutique hotel and but it also hosts one of several locations of the Grand Bohemian Art Galleries.

She has also rendered a series of drawings of Old New Orleans which are showcase in the new Marriott.

Make a Room Feel Larger

Everyone wants their home to feel warm and inviting but we also want the room to appear larger. As a rule, we recommend mounting window treatments several inches above the window. For example, say you have an 8' ceiling height and you mount your window treatment under your crown molding or just below the ceiling, not only will the room appear larger but the ceiling height will appear taller as well.Another mistake a homeowner might make would be to add a cornice with a straight bottom and then mount that cornice at the top of the window. Below I have created a rendering with our "Minutes Matter Studio" graphic design software to illustrate the different look achieved when the cornice is mounted near the crown molding or ceiling opposed to mounting at the top of the window. See how much taller the ceiling height appears and how much larger the room looks.

Here is another design tip when trying to make a ceiling look higher. Add a shape to the bottom of the cornice. By adding movement to the bottom of the cornice it can trick the eye into moving up and down so the eye does not stop at the longest point of the cornice.

You could also accomplish extra height with drapery panels and a decorative rod. Notice the difference when you mount the drapery rod at the top of the window or when you mount the rod under the crown molding or near the ceiling.
